Teacher of the Year 2000 Mr. Donovan Doyle, Head of Mathematics Dept., Herbert Morrison Technical High School being congratulated by Mr. Donald Foster, National Programmes Director HEART Trust/NTA and Mrs. Loveda Jones, Director - THSDP.
The event was one that was characterized by deep admiration, respect and reverence for the teaching profession. On August 11, 2000 the teacher of the Year Awards and Luncheon ceremony was held at the Jamaica Grande, Ocho Rios, St. Ann. It marked the culmination of a rigorous process of selecting a teacher of the year from each school. Eventually, at the end of the first round, sixteen (16) teachers were selected from eleven schools as the return rate of questionnaire from three schools was too low to qualify them to move on to the 2nd round.
Each teacher was assessed by his Principal, Vice Principal (s), other teaching colleagues and a selection of students. They were assessed in light of their professional conduct, dedication to the field of education, pedagogical skills and contribution to school and community. Based on the results of this assessment sixteen teachers from eleven schools were selected. These selectees were then invited to an interview. Six teachers emerged as the most outstanding teachers from the technical high schools. Mr. Donavan Doyley, the Head of Mathematics at Herbert Morrison Technical received the highest award of Teacher of the Year - 2000.
At the event, participants were treated to sumptuous meal. Each teacher was presented with a plaque and a gift basket. Greetings were delivered by Mr. Wesley Barrett, Chief Education Officer, Ministry of Education & Culture and Mr. Don Foster, National Programmes Director, HEART Trust/NTA. Mr. Barrett and Mr. Foster spoke about the importance of the focus being placed on the technical high schools. Wit and humour was brought to the occasion by Mr. Mark Thomas, Director of Communications, HEART Trust/NTA,, who chaired the function. Mr. Othneil White Head of Dept., Dunoon Technical thrilled the audience with his rendition of "vision" and Mr. Carl Mathews, Music teacher at Herbert Morrison Technical, provided musical accompaniment.
The top six teachers were asked to expound on the strategies they employ to make their subjects interesting. Their responses were interesting and varied and spoke to their creativity as teachers.
In his reply Mr. Doyley spoke about the excellent work his colleagues were doing, thanked them for selecting him, referred to the challenges being experienced and spoke about his unwavering commitment to the teaching profession.
